Fun facts about metal recycling

Metal can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality, with a single aluminum can's recycling saving enough energy to power a 100-watt light bulb for 20 hours. Recycling also saves a significant amount of energy—up to 95% for aluminum—and reduces pollution, such as by cutting air pollution by up to 86% and water pollution by up to 76% when using recycled steel.

Energy savings

Aluminum: Recycling aluminum requires up to 95% less energy than making it from raw materials. The energy saved from recycling just one aluminum can is enough to power a 100-watt light bulb for 20 hours, a TV for two hours, and a computer for three hours, notes Best Choice Recycling and Metal Men Recycling.

Steel: Recycling steel uses about 60% less energy than producing new steel from iron ore, according to Metal Men Recycling.

Energy conservation: Recycling one ton of steel can save 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone.

Environmental impact

Pollution reduction: Using recycled steel to make new steel reduces air pollution by about 86% and water pollution by about 76%, says GLE Scrap Metal and Just Scrap It.

Long-term waste: An aluminum can can take 200 to 500 years to decompose in a landfill, making recycling it crucial for preventing waste. A steel can takes about 50 years to decompose, notes Broughshire Waste Metals.

Recycling and its speed

A fast process: The recycling process is fast. An aluminum can can be back on the shelf in its new form in as little as 60 days, says North Star Metal Recycling and Metal Men Recycling.

Infinite recycling: Steel can be recycled infinitely without losing its strength or quality.

A circular economy: Metal recycling contributes to a circular economy. Globally, around 60% of all the copper ever produced since the 1900s is still in use today.
